A Challenge Deck is preconstructed theme deck with special Magic: The Gathering cards. It is a self-running deck with its own set of rules, also known as "player vs. environment". The challenge cards have special card backs, which means they aren't counted as regular Magic cards. When playing against the challenge deck players may use hero cards.
Playing against challenge decks is a casual multiplayer variant of Magic, much like Horde Magic. The players each have 20 life and take their turn simultaneously. Players may begin the game with up to two hero cards in their command zone to assist in defeating the challenge deck. The players win when they meet the challenge deck's win condition. The challenge deck is victorious if all of the players have been eliminated from the game.

Battle the Horde

In battling the minotaur horde, players can use up to three Hero Cards from any of the five earlier Quests. They may only use each Hero Card once.[3] Defeating the Horde means they've earned another Hero Card.
The Horde has no life. Instead, for each 1 damage one card from the Horde's deck is put into the graveyard. You win when the Horde has no cards left in the deck and no more creatures on the battlefield.

Defeat a God

Defeat a God is a challenge deck that was used at the Journey into Nyx Game Day. The deck features the revelling Satyrs of Theros, and the ascended Xenagos.

Face the Hydra

The Challenge deck contains 60-cards (18 Heads and 42 Sorcery cards). The 15 unique cards are not legal in regular Magic, which is made clear by their different card back. Some of the Heads have the supertype elite. When playing against this deck the player may use his Hero cards. The Hydra follows a predetermined sequence of casting cards from its shuffled deck and blasting the player for damage. The goal is to eliminate all of the Hydra heads before it eats you. When you cut one head down, sometimes more grow back. If you win against the challenge deck, you win a third Hero card
